Even the most successful people in the world have their setbacks, defeats, and humiliations. Vegas is a town that is all about money. This is no secret. So, if someone doesn’t bring in the green they are shown the door.

However, who would think this could happen to one of the world’s most famous singer and entertainer. This man has been dead for decades, but still lives.

It will shock some that Elvis Presley’s debut in Las Vegas was a total flop, a disaster for the 21 year old rising star. Because of the ongoing nuclear tests in the area, Elvis was dubbed the “Atomic Powered Singer.” The label fit, too.

It appears that maybe someone didn’t do their due diligence when exploring who would come to hear him. Elvis was given a two-week contract at the New Frontier Hotel. He was already very popular around the country, but apparently Las Vegas didn’t get the memo.

On April 23, 1956, Elvis introduced his act to a mostly middle-aged crowd, a crowd that just didn’t get him. They didn’t know what to think of this hip-gyrating singing youth. Local newspaper reporters quickly panned Elvis’s performance. He was promptly fired after his first week.

It was over a decade later when he came back and took Vegas by storm. From 1969-1976, Elvis Presley performed over 700 times at the International Hotel (now the Westgate) to sold out audiences. Elvis Presley was, and still is, the undisputed “King of Rock and Roll.”

Today, he has a whole new generation of young fans. According to Forbes Magazine, Elvis is the 2nd highest earning dead celebrity only topped by Michael Jackson. His name is recognized around the world and his music never seems to lose favor among his fans.

If you watch a lot of “Vegas” movies, you will almost always hear an Elvis song as part of the soundtrack. The King lives!!!
