Misconceptions plague video poker

There are so many misconceptions, myths, urban legends, and lies that people still believe about Las Vegas. Some of these have been perpetrated by movies. Movies are like the internet. Everything they present are true, right? Wrong!

We love Vegas history, lore, legends, and the countless stories about our favorite town. But, let’s try to get some facts straight. Let’s look at a few of the more often repeated lies about video poker.

Video poker machines come in a nice selection of varieties. Some of the popular types are Deuces Wild, Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Joker Poker, and Double Double Bonus Poker.

Those who play these machines, and know what they are doing, know which ones have the best payouts and how to play them. Two of the misconceptions about these machines are that either the casinos change the odds of winning a particular hand, like a royal flush, or they control which cards are dealt.

Neither of these are true. The Nevada Gaming Commission has strict regulations as to how the video poker machines operate. The truth is that a 9/6 video machine at the Venetian will render the same odds as one at El Cortez or Mandalay Bay. As with slot machines there are no hot or cold machines. Each round of video poker or spin of a slot machine is random and the payout odds are set.

Also, when you are dealt a hand in video poker, while you are deciding what to do, the computer is constantly shuffling the remaining cards in the deck. Only when you push the draw button do the top cards come to you. It’s all above board, no cheating. Again, the all seeing eyes of the Gaming Commission ensure the game stays honest.

Another myth and this applies to slots and video poker is that by using a player’s card, you decrease your chance of winning. The thinking is that since you are getting perks for playing the casino lowers your payouts. Again, Nevada law prevents this from occurring.

Next time you play video poker, just play by the basic strategy and forget all the myths and lies that still float about on the internet and in the casinos. However, always remember that the odds are always in favor of the house. Good luck!
