You are banned! Keep out!

You are banned! Keep out!

There is something that you do that can get you banned from gambling in a casino. It’s not illegal or unethical, but casinos hate it when you do it. They want to make sure you don’t get any of their “house edge.”

If you have seen the movie or read the book, “21,” you learned something about card counting, if you didn’t already know. In blackjack, card counting is a technique that allows the player to reduce the house edge to zero or better. It’s great for players, but casinos hate it.

Contrary to what you may have heard, card counting is not illegal. However, if caught, a casino will likely ask you to leave or at least to quit playing blackjack. Don’t worry, they won’t take you to the back room and break your arms. It’s not a crime. It’s a good idea not to ask the dealer for the count. LOL.

Card counting, and there are several different techniques, requires good concentration, but it can be mastered if you devote some time to it. Keep in mind that being a great card counter does not guarantee you will win, but it will greatly increase your chances of winning. The object is to not get caught doing it.

There are training apps you can get on your phone or computer that will help you become proficient in the art of card counting. One of the easiest systems to learn is called the “Hi-Lo” system. It is a way to determine the balance of high versus low cards left in the deck(s) and take advantage when the deck is favorable for the player.  To learn more about this system look here. You can also check out the other systems on this site.

Here is a video by Henry Tamburin on the ins and outs of card counting:
